It's a small world after all...
Hey, all. This morning, I found out that I'm two degrees separated from President Barack Obama on LinkedIn. Cool, huh?

    Hapy Solstice, Everyone.
It's 7:35 in Seattle, and for those who haven't been here this time of year, the sun still hasn't actually risen. It's working holiday hours right now, showing its face at 7:55 and calling it a day at 4:20. That's seven hours and twenty-five minutes of daylight. Happy holidays, all.

    Feast or famine
Plan A was doing some volunteer work today. Turns out the places I called wanted a longer-term commitment or earlier notice. I guess it's a good thing that groups like that can be picky, right?

Plan B: I'm fasting today. It's my way of being thankful that I can choose when to eat and want of food isn't a regular part of my life. Being Pagan means that just about anyhting biological we do (mindfully) is a religious act.

    Happy Thanksgiving, all.

    Happy Halloween, everyone...
Costume Plan A: "Corporate Whore." Consisting of a tacky dress, atrocious wig, fishnets (of course), bad makeup job and roughly a dozen corporate logos affixed with safety pins.

    Revised...

Costume Plan B: "Uncanny Valley Girl." Similar to above, but minus the logos and instead a latex mask done up as above. Intended Effect: Spooky.

In other news, check this out. Thank you, Google.

PS: In honor of Halloween; I kind of love this website...

Review of the new Transformers movie
I do admit that Netflix occasionally sends me movies that aren't really "good," per se, but seemed to be at least worth a spot on the queue, for the sake of nostalgia, pop-culture allusion or simple, perverse fascination. I also admit that when Sollite leaves town for one reason or other, I tend to reorder the queue so the crappy movies she has the good sense not to want to watch show up and I can slog through them just to get them out of the way. Of course, when she gets back, it's tricky to move all of the leftovers on the remaining list back to where they were before, so some movies end up in my dvd player prematurely, to say the least...

    SPOILER ALERT:
    They're robots in disguise.
I kind of wanted to see this movie as H. G. Wells meets H. P. Lovecraft and the first 45 minutes or so did not disappoint. Mankind is caught in the middle of an intergalactic confrontation beyond our comprehension. If Nyarlethotop were a cybernetic being, I could see him infiltrating an army base and murdering arbitrary brave men and women (well, men in this particular scene) sent to the middle east to protect English-speaking local kids who mysteriously vanish as soon as their fathers let us use the phone. If Marduk of the Fifty Names got confused one day and decided to turn himself into a crappy yellow Camero (conveniently sitting on the lot next to a yellow VW, a cute reference to the original toy series...), yeah, I could definitely see him trying to help some pitiful teenager get the girl and then totally mox it up, as alien life forms don't always pick up on the subtle (read: often painfully hilarious) nuances of high school courtship rituals.
Humanity's first encounter with alien life is horrifying or uncanny, but is, regardless, completely beyond our comprehension.
    Ia Megatron Fhtagn.
And then we actually meet the Autobots, the good guys, and things just slide right down hill. It was around this time the product placement started standing out, with the flashy cars chasing each other around, but not so fast as to miss an opportunity to flash a corporate logo or none-too-subtle advert. I think they had to make this movie over two hours long, just to have enough ad space to sell to put this movie in the black. They've taken a nostalgic kid's TV show and made it into the Super Bowl with explosions and car chases instead of football and commercials that don?t even try to hide themselves in discrete blocks during time-outs.
I guess I'm being harsh here, but then I seem to have forgotten what the original show was all about: selling toys. Come to think of it, I'm suddenly at a loss for thinking of a single show from the 80's that wasn't about selling something to kids (read: their parents). Either the show would come out and kids would demand a toy based on it, or some toy company would pour money at some cartoonists to create a series based around their product and what kinds of make-believe stories children should be concocting to play with them. Transformers happened to be the Pok?mon of their era. The key difference here being that instead of being cute little creatures (appealing to girls) who beat the snot out of one another (appealing to boys), Transformers were cartoon robots (appealing to kids) who transformed into cars, stereos, appliances and other consumer goods that those same children would be expected to get excited about later on in life in order to drive the economy out of the economic recession they all knew would come one of these days. Corporate consumerism got to get kids to buy toys with their allowances, while also sowing the seeds of later purchases a few decades down the line.

    Confronting our fears...
Right. Our species faces a series of challenges with nothing but its very survival at stake. We'll all be asked to face our fears. With that in mind, below you'll find the first photos taken of Savanah Rhys Uthoff (daughter of Jennifer and Alan) and her "uncle" Jeff.

    Savanah - Grin

    Savanah - Afraid

    Savanah - Kiss

(For those of you who weren't aware, I happen to have an irrational fear of babies. Look up "Uncanny Valley" for the closest thing I can find to an explanation.)

(For those of you who were, this is by no means any indication that your old pal, Safetygoth likes/wants babies. At all. I'm just entering a time of life that more and more of my friends are spawning the squirmy little homoculi and *not* fleeing from the room from them would be socially useful.)

Oh, Bonus fear faced: I had to sign up for Photobucket to load these damned pictures, so yes, Savanah, I went the extra mile for you. Thank me in a few years.

    "Where were you when..."
Hey. So, I heard a Youtube video about voting, asking what you'll tell your kids you were doing this election (attempting to mobilize the ::Knocks wood:: traditionally lazy blue vote). In that spirit, I made calls from the Obama website for about half an hour, then started calling random people from my day planner until my phone ran out of batteries.

I'll probably start caling again once it has some time to charge.

I'll be damned if I have to tell my nephews and neices I just sat at home that day.

    Damned to Hell.

    For God's sakes, people...
Odds are, if you tend to read my journal, you're likely the sorts that I want voting in this election. Get registered and vote. Even those of you who happen to be in a certain "Red" state. No sense letting the GOP call it an easy win down there.

Seattle/Portland people: Vote early, vote often.

    MBA Aceptance... kind of...
So, Bainbridge Graduate Institute, the greenest green that ever did green wants me. Whenever I read a book about sustainable business modeling and the movement of businesses focused on sustaining human and ecological well-being, BGI usually comes up at some point. And they want me. That's pretty sweet, huh?

I think PSU does too, but I'm not entirely sure. they mentioned sending an acceptance package in the mail, but I'm not entirely clear on that. Their program is pretty awesome, too... We'll see how things work out.

(On the side, UWash didn't share the other two's good judgment, but then I sort of bombed that interview... ::Shrug:: Not much lost.)

So, that means that I need to choose between the two and start networking like a fiend to find a job to fund this education, whichever place is involved. Either way, though, it does mean I have a fairly clear plan to head back up to the Pacific Northwest...

    W00t
Despite getting a little winged about a third of he way through the Quantitative Reasoning section, I still managed to crawl my way out of the GMAT with a 710 combined score (Not counting the writing section, on which I expect to have done well). For those otherwise unaware, that's pretty darned good. (Oh, and for those further unaware, the GMAT's the main entrance exam for getting into Business School). The range is from about 200 to 800, on a pretty wicked curve. Anything about 700 is "rare," implying that it's two (or maybe three) Standard Deviations above the Mean. To put this in perspective, Portland State University (the only school I've given all that much attention) reported that its students averaged 624, with eighty-percent ending up within 590 and 670. Since 670 is the 90% range, a 710 places me well within their upper nineties, percentile-wise and will (I hope) go a long way toward making up for a rather rocky Undergraduate GPA. Regardless, I've got some applying-to-schools to do and a FAFSA to fill out, but for tonight, I'm just going to unwind and breath a sigh of relief, knowing that I never have to take another standardized test again...

Thanks to everyone for their support!

    Checking in...
As some of you may not have known, Austin was suffering from a drought until Lynette and I got here. Since then it's rained. A lot. I have friends here who think I've got more than a little bit to do with that. While it would be gouch to take the credit, it wouldn't be much fun to disabuse them of the notion.

Speaking of things for which I'll be taking credit, Indymac Bank (for whom I'm working through three degrees of separation) is having a hiring fair this next Wednesday, if anyone in Austin is looking for a job with a bank. Let me know and I'll forward you the info.

Finally, I won't be coming to Portland this September. The wedding is off, the couple who invited me broke up, and to top it off, there's a wedding in Kansas City happening in less than a month that I probably ought to attend. Sorry to all in PDX to make such a fuss and ditch out. Maybe I will go to that reunion in October... Cheers.
